The word "Meteora" translates to "suspended in the air" which aptly describes the otherworldly appearance of these rock formations. Perched atop these towering cliffs are the famous monasteries of Meteora. Originally built by monks seeking solitude and refuge from political turmoil in the 14th century, these monasteries have become iconic symbols of Greek history. Today, only six of the original 24 monasteries are still active and open to visitors: the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, St. Stephen, Holy Trinity, Rousanou, and St.Nicholas Anapausas.
